During the course for the ammonia diploma OTTC will give you a detailed introduction to the thermosyphon system. We will teach you the required components and also their function.

You will learn about safety switches on reciprocating compressors. We teach you about dry and wet suction lines, also discharge lines and low-pressure lines.
You learn about the oil return system on reciprocating compressors. As well as HP and LP float valves and their function. Also step by step oil change on a compressor.

At OTTC we teach you what safety equipment is required on and around ammonia plants.
We teach suction and discharge super heat and sub cooling. You get a brief introduction to the log P–h diagram.

Also learn about oil, water and air in ammonia plants.
You learn about design pressures and corrosion allowance including risk assessment. You will be able to calculate room capacity and belt drive, also compressor speed.
Here at OTTC we will teach you how to draw a P & ID of a thermosyphon system (gravity flooded).

At the end of the week a written test will be given where a 60% pass rate is required.

Week 2 OTTC will give you an introduction to the pump-re-circulation system including level float switches and their functions. We will also teach you about expansion devices.
You will investigate the pros and cons of canned motor pumps versus open drive pumps, as well as how to protect a canned motor type pump.


OTTC will teach you how to calculate room capacity and belt drive, also compressor speed and product freezing. We teach you charging of ammonia, also purging of air as well as oil draining. You learn how to establish if there is water in ammonia plants and how to remove it, including the influence of water on the plant.

Also air and oil how to establish if there is air in the plant and how and where
to purge it. OTTC will teach you to draw a complete P & ID of a pump re-circulation plant with hot gas defrost.

At the end of the week a written test will be given where a 60% pass rate is required.

OTTC practical work for ammonia diploma at our ammonia plant.

You will begin with the start-up procedure of the plant and do an oil change on the compressor if required. We will teach you to check all safety switches as well as water, oil and ammonia including compressor head cooling.

You will learn to measure suction and discharge pressures
as well as super heats and differential pressures. During the practical course we will teach you to measure water temperature in the condenser also head cooling.

Measure whether we have sub cooling and how to purge air. You will drain oil and check for water in the ammonia liquid.
We will teach you how to establish wet bulb temperature, also to adjust suction pressure regulator to two different settings (zero and minus 5 C).


You will study and check HP and LP float valves as well as dismantle stop valves.

At the end of the week a written test will be given where a 60% pass rate is required.

For the second week of practical training OTTC will teach you to dismantle and re-assemble a piston compressor, check for wear, also check shaft seal as well as filters.You will study the oil lubrication system and why the compressor has a heater in the  crankcase as well as when is it energized.

You will study the capacity control system. At OTTC we will teach you to operate a plant with three different expansion devices also finding and rectifying a number of faults.
Also during practical training you will visit similar plants in the Gauteng area.

At the end of the week a written test will be given where a 60% pass rate is required.

The OTTC lecturer will discuss the following different plant options and you will have
to make sketches and/or drawings:


• Plants with screw compressors and piston compressors and combinations thereof
• Booster or two-stage plants
• Plants with economizers
• Plants with LIOC (liquid injection oil cooling)
• Plants with TSOH (thermosyphon oil cooling)
• Plants with water cooled oil coolers

At OTTC we will teach you about plant malfunctions and there remedies as well as how
to calculate room capacity and belt drive. Also compressor speed and product freezing
swept volumes. We will teach you how to calculate the COP of a plant (COP= coefficient
of performance).


We teach you safety regulations.
You will make sketches of a simple air purger, a plant with economizer, also a booster
plant as well as a plant with thermosyphon oil cooler.
We will teach you to make a complete P&ID of a pump re-circulation plant with pipes
sizing and hot gas defrost.

At the end of the week a written test will be given where a 60% pass rate is required.
