    What you will learn:

    We will teach you the required components and also their function.

    In this Ammonia course you will learn about safety switches on reciprocating compressors.

    About dry and wet suction lines as well as discharge lines and low-pressure lines.

    The oil return system on reciprocating compressors as well as HP and LP float valves and their function. 

    We’ll teach you the step by step oil change procedure on a compressor.

    At OTTC:

    At OTTC we teach you what safety equipment is required on and around ammonia plants.

    We teach you suction and discharge of super heat and sub cooling.

    The lecturer also gives you a brief introduction to the log P–h diagram.

    OTTC ammonia refrigeration training will explain about the oil, water and air in ammonia plants.

    You learn about design pressures and corrosion allowance including risk assessment.

    Our students are able to calculate room capacity and belt drive, also compressor speed.

    Here at OTTC we will teach you how to draw a P & ID of a thermosyphon system (gravity flooded).

    At the end of the week a written test will be given where a 60% pass rate is required.

    Week 2:

    OTTC’s ammonia refrigeration training will give you an introduction to the pump-re-circulation system, including level float switches and their functions.

    We will also teach you about expansion devices.

    You will investigate the pros and cons of canned motor pumps versus open drive pumps, as well as how to protect a canned motor type pump.

    OTTC Ammonia Refrigeration Training will teach you calculations:

    Our Ammonia refrigeration training will teach you how to calculate room capacity and belt drive, also compressor speed and product freezing.

    We teach you charging of ammonia, also purging of air as well as oil draining.

    You learn how to establish if there is water in ammonia plants and how to remove it, including the influence of water on the plant.

    Also air and oil how to establish if there is air in the plant and how and where to purge it.

    Ammonia course students will learn to draw a complete P & ID of a pump re-circulation plant with hot gas defrost.

    At the end of the week a written test will be given where a 60% pass rate is required.

    OTTC practical work for ammonia diploma at our ammonia plant:

    You will begin with the start-up procedure of the plant and do an oil change on the compressor if required.

    We will teach you to check all safety switches as well as water, oil and ammonia including compressor head cooling.

    Kurt will teach you to measure suction and discharge pressures.

    as well as super heats and differential pressures.

    During the Ammonia refrigeration training practical course, we will teach you to measure water temperature in the condenser also head cooling.

    Measure whether we have sub cooling and how to purge air.

    This Ammonia course will teach you to drain oil and check for water in the ammonia liquid.

    We will teach you how to establish wet bulb temperature, also to adjust suction pressure regulator to two different settings (zero and minus 5 C).

    You will study and check HP and LP float valves as well as dismantle stop valves.

    At the end of the week a written test will be given where a 60% pass rate is required.

    Second week of ammonia training practical:

    For the second week of practical training.

    OTTC will teach you to dismantle and re-assemble a piston compressor as well as check for wear and check shaft seals as well as filters.

    You will study the oil lubrication system and why the compressor has a heater in the  crankcase as well as when is it energized.

    In this Ammonia course you will study the capacity control system.

    We will teach you to operate a plant with three different expansion devices and also find and rectify a number of faults.

    Visiting other plants:

    During practical training you will visit similar plants in the Gauteng area.

    At the end of the week a written test will be given where a 60% pass rate is required.

    What the lecturer will discuss with you:

    Kurt will discuss the following different plant options and you will have to make sketches and/or drawings:

    • Plants with screw compressors and piston compressors and combinations thereof.
    • Booster or two-stage plants.
    • Plants with economizers.
    • Plants with LIOC (liquid injection oil cooling).
    • Plants with TSOH (thermosyphon oil cooling).
    • Plants with water cooled oil coolers.

    At OTTC we will teach you about plant malfunctions and there remedies as well as how to calculate room capacity and belt drive.

    Also compressor speed and product freezing
    swept volumes.

    We will teach you how to calculate the COP of a plant (COP= coefficient
    of performance).

    Kurt teaches you safety regulations.

    You will make sketches of a simple air purger, a plant with economizer, also a booster plant as well as a plant with thermosyphon oil cooler.

    We will teach you to make a complete P&ID of a pump re-circulation plant with pipes sizing and hot gas defrost.

    At the end of the week a written test will be given where a 60% pass rate is required.

    What is the Ammonia Diploma

    The OTTC Ammonia Qualification established 1993 for people working on ammonia.

    As well as People working on plants and consulting engineers or contracting companies. 

    OTTC – Open Trade Training Centre was founded by Peter, Susanne and Isolde Dobelin in 1992.

    Peter Dobelin was a German Master in Refrigeration, Air-conditioning as well as Heating and specialized expert in Ammonia.

    He worked 11 years for Ahlborn Hildesheim (now GEA) and BBC York Mannheim.

    Peter worked as manager of work installing and maintaining Dairies, Breweries as well as Chicken and Chocolate Factories and many more applications.

    From his experience, he felt there is an urgent need to establish the OTTC Ammonia Diploma Qualification.

    Mr. Dobelin wanted to safeguard and protect technicians and the high investments on ammonia plants.

    This OTTC Ammonia Diploma Qualification was immediately and accepted by the industry. 

    After Peter Dobelin passed away in December 2002. 

    Isolde Dobelin could convince BSc Mechanical Engineer Kurt Johannsen, to take over the training of the OTTC Ammonia Diploma Qualification. 

    Kurt is always extending and upgrading the training to the latest standard of technology. 

    So far we have over 400 graduated OTTC Ammonia Diploma Holder working all over the world.

    The OTTC Ammonia Diploma consist of a 6 weeks intense theoretical and practical (on our training plant) program.

    Every course is 1 week and consists of:

    AM-1 and AM-2 as well as AM-P1 and AM-P2, AM-Diploma and AM/SH/ASS.

    Our AM-Diploma and AM-Safe Handling course of Ammonia training also invented by OTTC in 2004 by BSc Mechanical Engineer Kurt Johannsen.

    Every Friday is a Test with a pass mark of 60% and for the AM-Diploma and a pass mark 75%.

    All testing is done individual by each course participant. (No team testing).
